The first pier was made of wood. Construction work began in 1891. It was opened on January 18, 1894 by David Boyle, 7th Earl of Glasgow , the Governor General of New Zealand . Also present at the opening were Walter Cooper , the Mayor of Christchurch, JR Brunt, the Mayor of Linwood and the two House members George John Smith and William Whitehouse Collins . It started raining during the ceremony, so the planned fireworks display had to be postponed. The pier was built over a length of about 213 meters. There were plans to build an octagonal end with a large building, but these were not implemented. Over time, the pier fell into disrepair, which is why the city council ordered its demolition. This was done within four and a half hours on the morning of October 12, 1965 when the tide was falling.

Second pier

New Brighton residents raised funds to build a new pier for 30 years. The Pier and Foreshore Society , which had already campaigned for the preservation of the old pier, supported this campaign. After collecting two million New Zealand dollars , the project was supported by the city council and a new reinforced concrete pier was planned. The new pier was built in the same location and opened on November 1, 1997. It is 300 meters long, making it one of the longest piers in Australasia . The New Brighton Pier is the symbol of New Brighton and since the Christchurch earthquake in February 2011 that severely damaged ChristChurch Cathedral , it is also a symbol of Christchurch. The pier is a tourist attraction and venue for skate events and the annual Guy Fawkes fireworks display on November 5th. The pier was damaged by multiple earthquakes, most notably the 2016 Christchurch earthquake . The 18-month repair work started at the end of 2016. The cost ranged from eight to nine million New Zealand dollars. In 2018 the New Brighton Pier reopened.
