New Castle (County Down)

New Castle ( Irish An Caisleán Nua ) is a ruined castle at the mouth of the Shimna River in Newcastle in County Down, Northern Ireland . The original castle is mentioned in a document as early as 1433 and was built to monitor the river crossing. In 1588 the castle was rebuilt by Feidhlimidh Mag Aonghusa ( Felix Magenis ). This building was destroyed in 1830.
