New Deal (UK)

The labor market policy of the Labor government in Great Britain in 1998 was called the New Deal , based on the American New Deal of the 1930s . Their aim was to reduce unemployment through the provision of training courses, government funding of jobs and voluntary work by the unemployed.

Programs

New Deal was originally designed to influence youth unemployment (18 to 24 year olds). There are now programs for other groups too:

  • New Deal for Young People (NDYP) - for unemployed youth (ages 18-24),
  • New Deal 25+ for adults (aged 25+) who are unemployed,
  • New Deal for Lone Parents - single parents with school-age children,
  • New Deal for the Disabled - Helps recipients of disability benefits get back to work
  • New Deal 50+ for people in the age group 50 and older.
  • New Deal for Musicians - for aspiring unemployed musicians
