New Mexico State Treasurer
The New Mexico State Treasurer is one of the constitutional offices of the State of New Mexico . The incumbent acts as the chief banker of New Mexico.
The office was created in 1912 with a five-year term. The incumbent is elected by the eligible population of New Mexico. At the elections in 1916, the term of office was reduced to two years with the possibility of one re-election. The term of office was then extended to four years for the elections in 1970. Re-election was not possible. Another change was made for the 1990 elections. The term of office remained at four years. For this, the possibility of a one-time re-election was granted.
The incumbent New Mexico State Treasurer is Tim Eichenberg , who took up his post on January 1, 2015.

History of corruption
Several cases of corruption have occurred in the Office of New Mexico State Treasurer over the past few decades:
- In 1975, former Democratic State Treasurer Jesse D. Kornegay pleaded guilty to perjury charges and served his time in federal prison .
- In December 1984, State Investment Officer Phillip Troutmanm and Deputy State Treasurer Ken Johnson were arrested. You were found guilty of extortion on charges of dating in 1985. Both told a New York bank that government funds would not be invested there unless the bank made a political donation. Both were sentenced to two years in prison and fined $ 5,000 each. The Governor of New Mexico Toney Anaya appointed James B. Lewis as the successor to Johnson.
- In 1985, Democratic State Treasurer Earl Hartley pleaded guilty to the criminal offenses in the Office. Hartley embezzled more than $ 4,000 from the Western State Treasurers Association . The court ordered him to repay the money, including a $ 1,000 fine. The Democratic Governor of New Mexico Toney Anaya pardoned him in 1986. Even after pleading guilty, Hartley insisted that he had committed no crime.
- Democratic State Treasurer David W. King testified as the main witness against former State Treasurer Division Manager Joseph O. Garcia, who was fired by King in 1993. Garia was charged with bribing an official after allegedly offering King money to agree to an Arizona company investment plan. The trial ended in an acquittal for Garcia.
- Former Democratic State Treasurer Michael A. Montoya pleaded guilty to federal extortion charges in 2005 and racketeering in 2007 . Montoya was sentenced to four years in prison.
- In 2006 a jury found former Democratic State Treasurer Robert E. Vigil guilty of attempted extortion but acquitted him of 23 other extortions and racketeering. Vigil was a protégé of Michael A. Montoya. He spent two years and two months in federal prison. New Mexico Democratic Governor Bill Richardson named Republican Douglas M. Brown to replace him when Vigil resigned in December 2005.
