Newton Don

Newton Don is a mansion near the Scottish town of Stichill in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

Newton Don was completed in 1818 after a year of construction. The famous English architect Robert Smirke provided the design . The builder was the Scottish officer and MP in the House of Commons for the constituency of Roxburghshire , Alexander Don, 6th Baronet . It is possible, however, that fragments of an older date from the period after 1776, when Don's father of the same name commissioned the architect Robert Adam to create a design, were integrated. During the First World War , Newton Don housed a military hospital.

The classicist mansion is located around one kilometer south of Stichill near the right bank of the Eden Water . In the surrounding park and gardens there are outbuildings, including various lodges, cottages, stables and greenhouses as well as an estate . There are also several sculptures by the important stonemason Alexander Carrick .
