Next generation online
Next Generation Online (Nexgo) was the Arcor Group's online service from 2000 to 2001.
He combined the portals of germany.net , o.tel.o and Arcor into a common platform for information, mail and messaging. A striking feature of the website was a so-called "Personal Internet Assistant" (PIA), which bundled the links to all functions of the online service:
- PIA Messaging A webmail frontend with functions for sending, receiving and saving e-mails, options for receiving and sending faxes, sending SMS, sending SMS notifications and a voice mailbox. All of these functions are known as Unified Messaging .
- PIA Organizer A web frontend for appointments with reminder and synchronization functions with Palm handheld and Outlook.
- PIA address book An online address book
- PIA Birthdays An online birthday calendar with a reminder function via SMS or email.
- PIA Photo Album An online photo album for storing digital photos in various albums. These albums can be made available publicly or only to a limited group of users with different access levels.
Other components of the portal were current news (news ticker) as well as information from politics, sport and culture. Several web forums, IRC, chats and access to Usenet were available as a community. The participants were also able to set up their own website in the provided web space and UUCP-over-IP access was available for emails and Usenet, which is still operated today on the basis of an association.
The paid video-on-demand service has also been implemented in Nexgo . Payment was made with the small wallet originally developed for the UMS.
Nexgo was replaced by the Arcor brand as the Internet platform, with the PIA concept and layout remaining unchanged for a long time. After a relaunch of the Arcor portal at the end of 2007, the characteristic PIA front end for accessing the UMS functions was replaced by a different navigation and the use of PIA in the portal was largely reduced in favor of a generic service term. PIA was retained as the product name for the UMS scope of services, which varies depending on the tariff.
