Nezu ( Japanese 根 津 ) is a district of the Bunkyō district in the east of the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo . It is located north of central Tokyo west of Ueno and has around 5,500 inhabitants in two numbered quarters, chôme . The postal code of Nezu is 113-0031. Together with the districts of Ya naka (in Taitō ) and Sen dagi, Ne belongs to the so-called Yanesen ( 谷 根 千 ), a part of Tokyo that is considered representative of Shitamachi , the "lower town" of Edo / Tokyo, in which, unlike in the aristocratic Yamanote, is the common people lived and that is characterized by small-scale buildings with narrow streets.

The history of the area is that of the Nezu- gongen linked, the time Meiji wherein in the separation of Shinto and Buddhist in the Nezu shrine was converted. It was originally located in what is now Sendagi and was moved to its current location under Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi . Originally there were several smaller neighborhoods that had Nezu in their name before they were combined to form today's Nezu district in 1965.
