Throwing Knife of the Ngombe

In the 18th century, the Ngombe lived on the Likame River and west of the Mongala River. There they were harassed from the east by the Ngbandi . Because of their strong cohesion and their larger villages, they were able to withstand the Ngbandi better than other ethnic groups in the area. During the 18th century they expanded west and south, reaching the Ubangi and the Congo by 1800 . They took part in the slave trade there . In the late 1880s, after winning battles, they were able to displace the Mongo from areas south of the Congo.

The Ngombe traditionally wore scarifications .
