Ni hao, Kai-lan (German: "Hello, Kai-lan") is an animated series for preschool children produced for US television . It is the first American television program to teach preschoolers a basic knowledge of standard Chinese .
action
The central character of the program is the bilingual Chinese-American girl Kai-lan, who shares her language and culture with her animal friends and the children at home on the screen and plays with them. Kai-lan's animal friends are the koala Tolee, the tiger Rintoo, the pink rhinoceros Lulu, the little monkey Hoho and San san, the tiny leader of an ant colony, who include the friends in their community. Kai-lan's grandfather Ye Ye also performs.
Conception
Ni hao, Kai-lan has a similar structure to Dora the Explorer and Go, Diego, Go! , not only introduces children to a bilingual situation, but also presents a bicultural scenario in which not only parts of Chinese culture are presented, but also insights into the values of American Chinese are given. The series can also be compared with Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat from 2001, which, however, is set in China and does not teach any Chinese language skills.
publication
The series has been broadcast since November 5, 2007 by the American children's channel Nickelodeon and since March 1, 2008 also by the children's cable channel Noggin .
The episodes of the program developed by Karen Chau , a Chinese-American graphic designer, Sascha Paladino and Spencer Walker are each almost 25 minutes long.
