KK Nichirei ( Japanese 株式会社 ニ チ レ イ Kabushiki-gaisha Nichirei ) is a Japanese company that is one of the largest companies in this sector in the country in the food industry with a turnover of around 4 billion euros and almost 15,000 employees.

history

The current headquarters of Nichirei in Tokyo

Originally, the company was founded on December 24, 1942 as Teikoku Suisan Tōsei KK ( 帝国 水産 統制 株式会社 , English Teikoku Marine Products Control Company ): a government-initiated association of several fishing companies, which during the Second World War made food production from the Sea should ensure. Since the state-owned company suffered severe damage during the war, it was re-established from December 1, 1945 as the privately run Nippon Reizō KK ( 日本 冷 蔵 株式会社 ). After that, the range of marine products soon expanded to include other foods such as meat and poultry to meet the needs of the population. From around 1952, due to the increasing demand for easily storable and quick-to-prepare meals, frozen products and ice cream were produced on a large scale, initially with a focus on schools and other public canteens and from 1957 also for home use. As refrigerators became available in many households in the 1960s, the proportion of food sold to private consumers increased significantly. In the 1980s, the company had bad times with the oil crisis and its own mismanagement. Therefore, the company restructured and developed a new management plan, which also included the renaming to Nichirei in 1985. From 1988 Nichirei expanded to Europe, including the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and France.

Nichirei was the first Japanese company to meet the efforts initiated by Norway since the 1980s to bring Norwegian salmon to the Japanese market by offering frozen salmon sushi for the first time in 1995 . After an initial phase of acclimatization - since locally produced salmon was not used for sushi on the Japanese market for fear of transmitting parasitic diseases - this led to a high level of acceptance among the population within a few years. Sushi topped with salmon is one of the most popular types of preparation not only in Japan, but even worldwide.
