Importance in western culture
In the affirmative function , nodding is also often used to reinforce what is being said. A simple nod usually symbolizes approval for the interlocutor, while a slow, repeated nod indicates understanding and attentive listening.
Nodding is also used as a (more casual) greeting .
Why nodding has become established with the same meaning in so many cultures is not clearly understood. This is probably related to a modification of the bow or the lowering of the head, which signals submission, deference and also approval.
Meaning in other cultures
In other cultures, the meaning of the gesture may differ. In Bulgaria , Albania , Greece or India e.g. B. nodding is used exactly contrary to our use for rejection or negation .
