Brachypelma auratum (also red-legged tarantula ) is a Mexican tarantula species thatoccursin the states of Guerrero and Michoacán .

The maximum body length of the females is eight centimeters. In terms of color, this species is reminiscent of the Mexican red-knee tarantula ( Brachypelma smithi ) and was therefore previously regarded as a subspecies ("Hochlandsmithi"). In 1992 it was systematically listed as a separate species by Günter Schmidt . It is colored a little darker. On the patella (knee) she has a flame-like red markings that earned her the name "Flame Knee" in English-speaking countries. It is a sturdy, sturdy species that is considered quite adaptable.
Occurrence and way of life
Brachypelma auratum prefers mountain forests interspersed with rocks up to an altitude of 1000 meters, but also occurs in lower-lying areas. The settlement areas are seasonally very dry. The first specimens were caught in the highlands of Mexico City . In rare and heavy rains, the animals flee from their flooded living tunnels. Some animals live in the edge of the road construction.
