The kidney dagger , ( Engl. Kidney Dagger or Ballock Dagger ) is a late medieval weapon from Europe.
description
The kidney dagger has a straight, mostly double-edged blade. The blade becomes narrower from the handle to the location and tapers to a point. The blades are either flat or have a central ridge. The booklet has a cross- guard , which is provided with two spherical or egg-shaped thickenings at the end. By similarity to kidney ( Engl. Kidney ) or testicles (Engl. Colloquially ballocks ) this dagger got its name. The original name was Ballock Dagger , but weapons historians in England from the Victorian era onwards used the word Kidney Dagger instead to avoid the sexual connotation. Over time, the thickening of the quillons became smaller and smaller until they were completely abandoned. The handle is round and widens from the crossguard to the pommel. The pommel is usually disc-shaped and is closed with a plate. There are different versions. The kidney dagger was used in Europe from the 14th century to the 17th century.
