The Nieuport IX was the first of a large family of biplane fighters and scouts (Nieuport IX to XXV). The fuselage made of tensioned wooden parts and the wing were covered with canvas, only the area immediately around the engine was planked with aluminum. The Nieuport IX was designed as a two-seater with the observer in the front cockpit. He had a carbine with which he was supposed to repel enemy aircraft while standing on his seat.
