The Nieuwe Amstelbrug (also Ceintuurbaanbrug ) is a movable bridge over the Amstel River in Amsterdam . It connects the districts De Pijp and Oost-Watergraafsmeer . Ceintuurbaan Street , coming from the west , runs over the bridge and splits into Blasiusstraat and Ruyschstraat to the east of the bridge .

history

Due to the increasing traffic in Amsterdam, new bridges had to be built in the 19th and 20th centuries. Until then, ferries were mainly used on broader waters such as the Amstel . The municipal planning office Publieke Werken planned the Nieuwe Amstelbrug in collaboration with the well-known architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage as early as 1882. The original concept included a small island in the middle of the bascule bridge . A coffee house was to be built here later, among other things . Construction began in 1899. On July 4, 1903, the bridge was opened to traffic. Line 3 of the Amsterdam tram has been running over the bridge since 1904 . The lanterns, also designed by the architect Berlage, were erected in 1906.

The old bridge was completely removed from 1984. The new building, which looks the same as its predecessor, was built using historical components and was opened on April 12, 1986.
