The Nikolaikirche in Zeitz in the Saxony-Anhalt Burgenland district is a church built in 1891 and only preserved as a ruin today.

history

After the previous church was demolished in 1823, a new building was consecrated on Nikolaiplatz in 1891. Originally it was called the Trinity Church . It was planned by Karl Memminger. The brick building is designed as a hall church with a three-cone choir . The windows are designed with two and three lanes.

Some of the original bells came from the 15th century in Zeitz Cathedral (two bells) and came to the Nikolaikirche in 1891 together with a third bell. The smallest cathedral bell disappeared in the first half of the 20th century, the two old bells were initially to be sold to the Laurentiuskirche in Halle. However, donations were used to buy two new bells for the Laurentius Church and the two old bells of the Nikolaikirche were returned to the gatehouse of Zeitz Cathedral, where they had been hanging from the 17th century.

Due to the sandy subsoil, there were often static problems, so that the church could no longer be used since the beginning of the 1970s due to the dilapidation. In 1998 there was a lightning strike in the tower, which led to a roof fire, as a result of which part of the ribbed vault collapsed and the bell fell into the nave. There are currently no efforts to restore or maintain the church.
