The Nikolauskirche in Pyskowice (Peiskretscham) in Upper Silesia is the city's Roman Catholic parish church . The Gothic style church dates from the 15th century and is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra . It is the oldest church in the city. The building was entered in the monument register of the Silesian Voivodeship .

The St. Stanislaus Cemetery Church and the cemeteries at ul. Cmentarna and ul. Cicha also belong to the Nikolausgemeinde .

history

The first written mention of Peiskretscham comes from the year 1256. At that time, the existence of a church was also mentioned, which was consecrated to St. Paul . The original church was a wooden structure. It was founded by the brothers Lutozat and Lonek, the sons of Pisco. In 1412 the church was consecrated to St. Nicholas. Around 1450 the wooden church was replaced by a new stone structure. This burned down in 1622 and was then rebuilt. From the Reformation to 1629, the Nikolauskirche was Protestant, with the Counter-Reformation it became Roman Catholic again. From 1727 to 1728 the church building was enlarged. The church was damaged again in the great fire in 1822, the wooden church tower and the interior furnishings were largely destroyed. The church was restored and redesigned according to the plans of the architect Deschner. The stone church tower was completed in 1824. In 1913 the church tower was renovated; Bricks could be bought as a donation to finance the renovation of the tower. These artistically designed bricks showed the Nikolauskirche, a portrait of Mary with the baby Jesus and St. Nicholas.

architecture

The Nikolauskirche is a Gothic building with neo-Gothic and Baroque elements. It is rusted, bricked and the facade is plastered. The interior of the church is decorated in the baroque style. An altar dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk from the 17th century has been preserved to this day; it survived the fire of 1822 as one of the few pieces of equipment. The main altar has a portrait of St. Nicholas. The organ was created in 1897 by Ernst Kurzer . In the south and in the north there are side chapels from the years 1727 to 1728, which are symmetrically opposite each other. The church tower is on the west side.

In addition, some medieval liturgical devices still exist in the church, such as a standing cross made of metal from 1370, a chalice from 1510 and a chalice from 1515.

In the courtyard by the church there is a Way of the Cross and several grottos, including a Marian grotto from 1909 and a Marian column.
