Sir Nils Olav III. is a male king penguin who lives in the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland . He is the honorary mascot and brigadier general of the Royal Guard of Norway .

The connection originally goes back to the fact that Norway, whose expedition was the first to reach the South Pole in 1911 , donated a king penguin to Edinburgh Zoo when it opened in 1913.

The Norwegian Guard has had a special relationship with the Edinburgh penguins since the 1970s through their participation in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo , and the penguin Nils Olav was accepted into the regiment. After his death in 1987 Nils Olav II took over the successor. Since 2008 Nils Olav III. in office.

On August 15, 2008, he attended the Royal Guard of Norway and was the Norwegian King Harald V to hit Knight . Since then, the penguin has been named with the nobility title “ Sir ”. In 2016 he was made an honorary Norwegian Brigadier General at an award ceremony at Edinburgh Zoo.
