history

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, a registered not-for-profit company, was originally founded in 1909, inspired by Edinburgh attorney Thomas Hailing Gillespie . The original charter specifies the following purpose of the company:

"To promote, facilitate and encourage the study of zoology and kindred subjects and to foster and develop amongst the people an interest in and knowledge of animal life."

" To make known, to enable and to encourage the studies of zoology and the like, and to cultivate them and to develop an interest in and knowledge of animals among people."

The grounds of what is now the zoo were bought for society by Edinburgh City Council and the zoo was founded on February 4, 1913, but was not opened to the public until July 22. There was previously a tree nursery with a park on the site, where, among other things, the apple varieties James Grieve and John Downie were developed.

The Royal Statute was still awarded in 1913, but the prefix “Royal” was only used after a visit from King George VI. Awarded in 1948.

Since 1986 the company has also taken over the Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie , 48 kilometers south of the city of Inverness .

In 2005 the exhibition in the zoological garden comprised around 1000 animals, which are presented on around 33 hectares. Due to the mostly cool climate, the zoo has concentrated on mammals and birds in recent years, but there are still some reptiles and amphibians in the Discovery Center . The zoo shows the only koalas and since 2011 the only giant pandas in Britain. The zoo is also known for its extensive collection of penguins, such as the king penguins , the second largest penguin species in the world, gentoo penguins and rock penguins . The first penguins came to Edinburgh on a whaling expedition in January 1914. One of the penguins in the zoo, Sir Nils Olav II , is the mascot of the Norwegian King's Guard with the symbolic rank of Brigadier General . Other rare species are the Australian cassowary , the giant sea eagle , the black stork and the fan pigeon.

Rainbow Landings , a circular route through the aviary of Loris Parrot , was completed in December 2007 and opened.
