Nine Circles is a Dutch-German minimal electro band. The name comes from the " Nine Circles of Hell ", which Dante Alighieri describes in his Divine Comedy .

Nine Circles 1980–1982 - The beginning

Nine Circles was founded in 1980 in Amsterdam by Lidia "The Rose" Fiala and Peter van Garderen. Van Garderen first played in the formation Genetic Factor (together with Richard Zijlstra and Jan Snijders), a little later he met Lidia Fiala, who had been writing poems and lyrics since she was 15.

Richard Zijlstra worked at VPRO and hosted a program there called "Spleen". This gave new wave bands a chance to become better known through radio. Demo tapes were sent to VPRO and the best bands had the opportunity to play live on the radio and appear on the "Radio Nome" compilation. Nine Circles got the live radio deal and thus the opportunity to appear on LP. However, it was decided to work as a studio band and so there were no live performances. Van Garderen and Fiala had meanwhile entered into a relationship and developed around 60 songs within 2 years, of which a good half had been released on various CDs and LPs by 2013. In 1982 the couple separated and with that the temporary end of Nine Circles was sealed. Fiala later lived in a new relationship and only looked after her partner and the children.

Nine Circles 2009–2011 - the rebirth

In 2009 Lidia Fiala moved to Cologne to join her new partner. Her youngest son Patrick, who had stayed in the Netherlands, was browsing the Internet during this time and made her aware that interest in Nine Circles was still very high. Fiala was very astonished because she hadn't spoken about the music and lyrics for over 25 years. After a lot of considerations and suggestions from her circle of friends, she decided to revive Nine Circles. Over the years Peter van Garderen had built a different life for himself in which music no longer had a place. However, he supported the reactivation of the project by providing Fiala with the old material available, among other things. At the beginning of 2010 she teamed up with keyboardist Joachim Saleina, gave various concerts and also worked on some new songs. Although both were musically on the same wavelength, it became clearer over time that there were irreconcilable human differences between the two, so that at the end of 2011 they had to part ways and Nine Circles threatened to "die" again.

Nine Circles from 2012

In 2012, Nine Circles were revived for the second time. Lidia Fiala and Per-Anders Kurenbach ( Psyche , Shock Therapy , The Eternal Afflict ) got to know each other through Facebook and Myspace and realized that they were musically on the same wavelength and played their first concert at the end of May of the same year in Lyon (France). Since you had never seen each other before and could not rehearse, the gig - with success - spontaneous improvisation. Since then there have been regular concerts and news from Nine Circles. After the single "Number Not Available" was released, the new album "Alice" was released in September 2014.
