Nineteenth-Century Short Title Catalog

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nineteenth-Century Short Title Catalog (NSTC) is an online bibliographic database that records English-language titles from the 19th century through the end of World War I. The stated aim is to catalog all printed works that were published in Great Britain , the British colonies and the United States between 1801 and 1919. In addition, all English works that have been published in other countries as well as translations from English into other languages are included.

The NSTC is a meta-catalog , which relies on the lists of several key libraries, including the British Library , the Library of Congress , the Scottish National Library , the Harvard University Library , the Bodleian Library , the library of Trinity College , the Cambridge University Library and from Newcastle .

In May 2012, the NSTC comprised around 1.2 million entries. The project is considered to be particularly ambitious, as the introduction of steam-driven high - speed presses and the rapid technical progress at the time multiplied printing capacities and allowed book production to skyrocket during the recording period.

The previous publication phase from the start of book printing by the Englishman William Caxton in 1473 until 1800 is covered by the English Short Title Catalog .
