English Short Title Catalog
The English Short Title Catalog , or ESTC for short , is the complete electronic bibliography of all independent titles that were printed between 1473 and 1800 in English and in other languages in the English-speaking world. The ESTC is freely accessible on the British Library website.
Database
The online resource was essentially the result of a merger of the Wing Catalog with the British Library Catalog - in the intermediate step via the “Eighteenth-Century Short Title Catalog”. The ESTC records titles from one-page pamphlets to multi-volume books . Periodicals remain the subject of separate bibliographies. The search masks allow detailed research of the title formulations , identified subject groups and the accompanying bibliographical information on authors, publishers, composition of the title (with information on the number of pages of preface , text, index, etc.). In addition to the information that identifies the individual print, there is global location records (via library signatures), which allow the next available copy to be located. The ESTC has 460,000 entries (as of May 2012).
The ESTC reference numbers also allow the easy operation of EEBO (Early English Books Online) and ECCO (Eighteenth Century Collections Online), the commercial databases that share the same inventory (in the Federal Republic of Germany everyone who tries to gain access to the national license) accessible online in digital form .
International comparison projects include the German VD 17 , the STCN of the Netherlands and the international short title catalogs ISTC (15th century) and USTC (15th and 16th century).
