from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Short Title Catalog Netherlands (STCN) is the retrospective national bibliography of the Netherlands for printed works from the years 1540 to 1800. Abbreviations of cradle prints from the 15th century are also listed. The STCN includes books in all languages that were printed in the Netherlands during the period in question, as well as Dutch works that were published abroad. The only exception is the Flemish part of Belgium, which is covered by the STCV .

The STCN was set up under the auspices of the Royal Library of the Netherlands and completed in July 2009. The short title catalog includes more than 190,000 titles and over 500,000 volumes. Although the project financing has been completed, the STCN is managed by the Kgl. Library in The Hague continued to be added. The holdings of foreign libraries and archives are barely recorded, which is why it is difficult to say anything about the completeness of the STCN. Access to the online database is free.

The Dutch book printing before 1540 is fully accessible through two catalogs, the ISTC for the incunable period (15th century) and the Nederlandsche bibliographie van 1500 to 1540 for the so-called post incunabula (1500–1540). The short titles of both bibliographies will gradually be integrated into the more detailed STCN documentation system.

Further extensive catalogs of short titles from the early printing period are u. a. the Universal Short Title Catalog for the 15th and 16th centuries and the English Short Title Catalog , which includes English language prints from 1473 to 1800.
