Nippon Series 1986

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1986 Nippon Series was the 37th edition of the finals of the Japanese baseball championship . The "Best of Seven" series took place between October 18 and 27, 1986. The Seibu Lions as representatives of the Pacific League under manager Masaaki Mori met the Hiroshima Tōyō Carp from the Central League under their manager Junrō Anan . The Carp as representatives of the Central League had home rights in the first two and from the sixth game.

The DH rule was introduced in 1985 in the Nippon Series, but initially applied every other year for the entire series: in 1985 all games were played with DH and in 1986 all without. It was not until 1987 that it was applied in every single game according to the host's league affiliation.

Games

Because of a tie after 14 innings in the first game, the series ran for the first time in the history of the Nippon Series over eight games. After a 0-3 deficit, the Lions won the following four games and thus their sixth championship title. Even in the fifth game, from which Hiroshima would have secured another victory for the championship, it had been a draw after nine innings; it was not until the 12th inning that the pitcher Kimiyasu Kudo decided the game for the Lions himself with a sayonara hit , a walk-off hit . Kudo also contributed two saves in the sixth and eighth game to win the Lions title. He was named the series MVP .
