Nkanah

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nkana was once an independent place in the Copperbelt province of Zambia . Today it is part of the city of Kitwe .

Nkana was founded around 1920 as a station on the railway line in the Copperbelt . It was named after Chief Nkana , a traditional ruler in the area of the new establishment.

The copper ore from the surrounding mines of the Anglo American Corporation , the largest in the country at the time, was smelted in Nkana and loaded for export. About 20,000 workers were employed in the mines and smelting the ores.

In the late 1960s, the Zambian mines and smelting industries were nationalized. The Kitwe district, which provided services for the mines, grew rapidly. Both places merged with each other. In the 1970s Nkana was incorporated by Kitwe. Since then, both place names have been synonymous with one another.
