Noa (first name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Noa is a female given name .

Origin and meaning

The first name Noa comes from Hebrew and means "the one who moves". In the Bible Noa is one of the five daughters of Zelofhad ( 4 Mos 26,33  LUT ). Together they sue for the right of inheritance for women with Moses and the priest Eleazar after their father dies and leaves no son. The 5 sisters Machla, Noa, Hogla, Milka & Tirza actually receive it - which is more than spectacular for the time. This is reported in detail in the Bible, Numbers chapter 27 (Bible Numbers, 27). Noa is a descendant of Gilead from the Manasseh tribe.

For Noa Kiepenheuer, the name Noa goes back to Paul Gauguin's records from the South Seas ("Noa Noa").

In the 2000s, the name Noa became very popular in the Netherlands and was ranked 9th among the most popular girl names in 2009. The name Noa is also very popular in Israel ; in 2009 it was the most frequently given name for girls.

The name Noa is not related to the name Noah , which is pronounced the same in German.
