As Node B , which is the base station in a UMTS -Mobilfunknetz designated. The Node B is controlled by the so-called Radio Network Controller (RNC). A Node B supplies several UMTS cells, typically three or six.

Node B and RNC together form the so-called UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN for short), which, like an existing GSM network, is connected to the core network. The core network then establishes the connection to exchanges or to the Internet.

As a rule, Node B is in close proximity to the antenna. With the introduction of Remote Radio Heads (RRHs), the base stations can also be set up several kilometers away from the antenna.
