The Savior (Cantata)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When The Savior (The Savior) is a cantata for Passion of the English composer William Lloyd Webber . The subtitle A meditation upon the death of Christ (A meditation on the death of Christ) provides information on the character of the work. Bryn Rees put together the textbook, which in addition to his own poetry contains passages from the Gospel and some hymns . The cantata was composed for a performance on Palm Sunday in the Methodist Westminster Central Hall in London, where Lloyd Webber was an organist and church musician and whose cleric at the time, Rev. Derrick Greeves, is the dedicatee of the work. The premiere took place (as far as known) in 1961 .

Lloyd Webber orients himself in the layout of his work, in the line-up ( tenor and bass solo, choir and organ ) on the famous and frequently performed cantata The Crucifixion by John Stainer , to which he wanted to create an alternative.

The German premiere of the work took place on April 7, 2006 in Cologne by the chamber choir Collegium Cantorum Cologne under the direction of Thomas Gebhardt .
