William Southcombe Lloyd Webber (born March 11, 1914 in London , † October 29, 1982 in London) was an English church musician and composer .

biography

At the age of 14, William Lloyd Webber gave concerts as an organist at various churches in London and England. Webber studied at the Royal College of Music, among others with Ralph Vaughan Williams . Since there was another student in college by the name of William Webber, William used his third name, Lloyd, as part of his surname.

In 1938 he was organist and choirmaster at All Saints, later in Central Hall, Westminster , a major Methodist church. The first compositions were written in the 1930s.

In 1942 he married the pianist and violinist Jean Johnstone. The two sons Andrew (* 1948) and Julian (* 1951) emerged from the marriage. Both sons followed in their parents' footsteps and became important musicians and composers, in particular the musical melodies Andrews had a lasting impact on the music of the late 20th century.

Between 1945 and the mid-1950s, Lloyd Webber composed vocal and instrumental music, choral and organ works, chamber music and orchestral works. Then he took over a professorship in music theory and composition at the Royal College of Music in London; from 1964 until his death he was the director of that college.

William Lloyd Webber's music has received more attention in recent years, presumably due to the fame of his two sons.

Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote his Requiem in memory of his father.
