Missa Princeps Pacis
The Missa Princeps Pacis (Peace Prince Mass) is a composition for choir and organ by William Lloyd Webber . In 1962 he set the Latin mass to music, with the exception of the Credo.
Lloyd Webber, father of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber , was the organist and choir director of All Saints, Margaret Street , in London from 1939 to 1948 . From 1958 he was music director of Westminster Central Hall . During this time he composed two Latin masses, Princeps Pacis 1962 and Missa Sanctae Mariae Magdalenae .
The title Prince of Peace ( Prince of Peace ) is part of a prophecy by Isaiah ( Isa 9,5 EU ), the most famous setting of which comes from George Frideric Handel in his oratorio Messiah ( For unto us a child is born ). The composition includes the ordinarium of Mass with the exception of the Credo , as is customary in the Anglican Church .
The work was published in 1962 under the English title Mass The Prince of Peace , with the dedication "to my friend Father Wilfred Purney with affection" (my friend Father Wilfrid Purney in affection). It was recorded by Chandos in 1997 as "Mass: Princeps Pacis ". It was part of the album Invocation , a collection of works by William Lloyd Webber sung by the Westminster Singers with organist Ian Watson and directed by Richard Hickox .
The mass was published with the Latin title in the William Lloyd Webber Centenary Collection , which Kevin Mayhew brought out in 2014 for the composer's centenary. The mass was performed in the anniversary year as part of a celebration with Lloyd Webber's sacred music in St Martin-in-the-Fields church on March 11, 2014. The St Martin's Voices sang with the organist Andrew Earis. One reviewer wrote: "The first half ended with possibly the finest of the chosen works, the choral Missa Princeps Pacis, a beautifully crafted and proportioned composition with echoes of Fauré , performed here with delicacy." (The first half ended with perhaps the best of the selected works, the Missa Princeps Pacis for choir, a beautifully crafted and proportioned composition with echoes of Fauré , which was executed with sensitivity.)
construction
Webber divided the text into five sentences, to which he gave Italian tempo markings :
- Kyrie - Comodo e cantabile / Poco agitato
- Gloria - Allegro comodo / Meno mosso ed espreso / Allegro comodo
- Sanctus - Maestoso
- Benedictus - Andante sostenuto
- Agnus Dei = Comodo, ma poco mesto
