Nomiyama Gyōji ( Japanese 野 見 山 曉 治 ; born December 17, 1920 in Honami (穂 波 村) in Kaho County in Fukuoka Prefecture ) is a Japanese painter in the "western style" Yōga .

Live and act

Nomiyama Gyōji completed his training in 1943 at the Tōkyō Art College (東京 美術 学校, Tōkyō bijutsu gakkō), the forerunner of the Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku . In 1948 he was awarded a prize at the exhibition of the Association of Free Artists (自由 美術 家 協会, Jiyū bijutuska kyōkai). In 1952 he went to France for seven years and turned to abstract painting. He was influenced by Shina Sonoji (椎 名 其二, 1887–1962), an expert on France. In 1956 he became a member of the Société du Salon d'Automne . In 1958 Nomiyama received the Yasui Prize (安井 賞). In 1986 he became a professor at his alma mater. In 1978 he received the Japanese Essayist Club Award (日本 エ ッ セ イ ス ト ・ ク ラ ブ).

In 2000, Nomiyama was honored as a person with special cultural merits , in 2014 he was awarded the Order of Culture .
