The Noorzai / Nurzai (نورزی) belong to one of the most important tribes of the Pashtuns . As a descendant of the Durrani , the Noorzai tribe has lived in what is now Afghanistan since the 15th century and is linked to the line of the monarch Ahmad Shah Durrani . The Noorzai clan is spread all over the world, its roots are in the south of Afghanistan. The name Noorzai can be translated as of light or the enlightened .

The number of Noorzais cannot be determined as the majority are abroad. The United States, Pakistan, as well as Canada and Germany are preferred emigration areas. The total population is estimated at over 1.5 million worldwide.

The family is seen as wealthy and prominent in Afghan society. The sphere of influence of the Noorzai tribe is expressed in their powerful position in the Afghan parliament. For example, one of the many highly respected people of the Noorzai tribe is Haji Wakil Abdul Samad Khan. The sphere of influence is also expressed in their committed stance in the Afghan Human Rights Commission .
