Bento da França Pinto de Oliveira (born December 30, 1833 in Porto , Portugal , † October 21, 1889 in Aveiro , Portugal) was a Portuguese officer and colonial administrator.

Life

Pinto de Oliveira was a colonel in the cavalry and initially an employee in the Portuguese Foreign Ministry , where he was entrusted with political work in the overseas territories . In this context, Pinto de Oliveira had assignments in Mozambique , Cape Verde , Angola and Portuguese India . Due to financial problems, he decided in 1882 to accept the offered post as Governor of Portuguese Timor , although the trip with his wife, seven children (including two stepchildren), housekeeper and an adjutant was dangerous and the colony was considered unsafe and unhealthy. As early as 1883, Pinto de Oliveira resigned as governor. The son Henrique and one of the stepchildren had died of malaria . In addition, Pinto de Oliveira had worn down the hostility of the higher administration in Macau, Portugal, and the many local intrigues. Pinto de Oliveira became commander of the 9th Cavalry Regiment in Aveiro and lieutenant general in the army.

Bento was the son of Conde Bento da França Pinto de Oliveira , Field Marshal and first Count of Fonte Nova , and Maria José Tovar da Costa . He had three brothers and a sister, all older than Bento.

Bento was married to Maria Bernardina da Gama Lobo Saldanha e Sousa , the widow of his brother Salvador, with whom he had seven children:
