Nora Wompi

Nora (Nungurrayi) Wompi (* 1935 in Lilbaru , Western Australia ) is an Aboriginal artist.

Life

Nora Wompi had lived in the Great Sand Desert since she was born . To escape the harsh nomadic life of that time, she went with her mother to the Aboriginal mission station near Balgo . She worked there in the bakery and looked after goats.

Nora Wompi has been painting since 1988. At that time she was living in Balgo, where she met her husband, with whom she created works together. This is quite common for Aboriginal artists in Balgo. They lived together at Fitzroy Crossing at times until her husband died . Then Wompi returned permanently to Balgo, where there is a large community of Aboriginal artists. In 1990 her work was shown in the first collective exhibition of the Warlayirti Artists Group and in 1991 in the Baudoin Lebon Gallery in Paris. In 2002 a solo exhibition of her work took place in Darwin .
