Nordhorn coupling lock

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nordhorn Koppelschleuse is the western end of the Ems-Vechte Canal and thus part of the Left Ems Canal network .

history

First of all, an overflow weir was built at this point in 1878 to keep the water level in the canal constant. From 1880 to 1882 the lock was finally built in its current form. After the canal was closed for shipping in 1965, instead of the lock gates, a wooden gate was installed above and two solid wooden steps below. In 2002 the lock was restored by the Left Ems Canal Cooperative (LKG). Since the dissolution of the LKG, the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management and Coastal and Nature Conservation has been the operator.

Technical

The chambers are each 23 m long, the passage width of the gates is 4 m. Between the headwater of the canal and the Vechte , a height of 6 m is overcome. This is also the reason for using two lock chambers.
