North Rhine-Westphalian Ornithological Society
The North Rhine-Westphalian Ornithological Society ( NWO ) is an ornithological association based in Bonn . It was created in 1998 through the merger of the Society of Rhenish Ornithologists ( GRO ) with the Westphalian Ornithological Society ( WOG ). Its purpose is to promote ornithology and bird protection , especially bird research in the area.
Projects of the NWO
The NWO runs various projects. These include the breeding bird atlas project for North Rhine-Westphalia. For this purpose, the state-wide mapping results were published in the book The Breeding Birds of North Rhine-Westphalia . The red and black kite mapping in North Rhine-Westphalia was carried out in 2011/2012 and the results were published. In 2014, the NRW lapwing mapping was carried out in 2014 and the results were published. In the Phenology project , the geographic variation of the phenology of selected common species in NRW is documented.
NWO magazines and books
The NWO publishes the Charadrius and the NWO-Mitteilungen. Since it was founded, the NWO has published a number of books such as the breeding birds avifauna, The breeding birds of North Rhine-Westphalia , The breeding birds of the Wahner Heide and The birds of the Rhineland (North Rhine) - An atlas of the breeding and winter bird distribution 1990 to 2000 .

Prices of the NWO
The NWO awards two prizes every year. These are the NWO Prize and the NWO Promotion Prize . The NWO Prize recognizes special achievements in the field of ornithology in NRW by members of the NWO. The award ceremony includes a certificate with a laudation and a monetary amount of € 500. With the NWO sponsorship award , young ornithologists, even without membership, are honored for special achievements. The prize consists of a certificate with a laudation, a three-year membership in the NWO and a monetary amount of 300 €.
