North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation
The North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC) is a side agreement of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The agreement is intended to create the framework for the preservation and protection of the North American environment . This is to be achieved through cooperation between the contracting states and through effective implementation of environmental protection laws . The North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation was signed by Canada , Mexico and the United States of America and came into effect on January 1, 1994. The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) was also established within the framework of the NAAEC .
