The North Kirk , also St Peter's Church , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland on the Scottish Orkney island of South Ronaldsay .

In 1971 the building was first included in the Scottish monument lists in category B; in 2006 the church was upgraded to the highest category A.

history

The North Kirk was possibly built in 1642 on the site of a previous structure. Its roof was described as collapsed in 1795. In 1801 the building was restored and the roof restored. The small bell tower could also have been added in the course of this work. Another restoration was carried out in 1967. The church was once the parish church for the northern part of the island. Today services are only held in the summer months.

description

The church is located near the east coast of South Ronaldsay in the middle of a surrounding cemetery. In its execution it corresponds to the typical architectural style of the Orkney Islands. However, the building is relatively old and well preserved. It consists of an elongated building that ends with a slate-covered gable roof . On the eaves side, arched windows are arranged on four vertical axes. The years 1642 and 1801 are embedded above the entrance door on the south-east facade. An arched window can be found on the opposite gable surface. There is a small bell tower on it. In the northeast there is a small extension with a pent roof , which dates from the 19th century.
