from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Northern Vermont Railroad (NVR) was a railway company based in Vermont ( United States ) and Québec ( Canada ). It existed from September 28, 1996 to December 31, 2002. The company took over from the Canadian Pacific Railway the railway line from Wells River via Newport , where the company was based, to Richford and the Canadian border. An EMD GP35 , which was bought by the Southern Pacific Railroad , was sufficient for operation .

After the bankruptcy of the operating company Iron Road Railways at the end of 2002, the NVR ceased operations. The Washington County Railroad took over the route to Newport and continued operations. The Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway took over the section from Newport to the border .
