Notice of Readiness

The Notice of Readiness , or NoR for short , states that a ship is ready for loading or unloading when it arrives at a port or after certain obstacles have been resolved. The NoR is an essential part of a sea freight business as it initiates the start of certain time counting conditions.

As soon as a ship is ready for loading or unloading at a place specified in the freight contract or waits there at a predetermined time, the captain of this ship is obliged to notify the ship's charterers in writing that it is ready for loading or unloading. Only after the notice of readiness has been submitted by the ship, its confirmed acceptance by the freight forwarder and the fulfillment of the conditions specified in the freight contract, does the time to be paid for the ship begin to count. The timely submission of the NoR (for example on the weekend before the end of business of the agency designated for acceptance) can therefore decide whether a ship waits a few days at its own expense or whether the berthing days within the started freight contract are to be paid by the shipper.

In addition to arriving at a specific loading or unloading point, the ship often has to meet a number of other conditions before submitting the NoR. The most elementary condition here is the preparation of the ship for its cargo (clean holds, working cargo handling equipment, etc.). Depending on the clauses used in the freight contract, other conditions may also have to be met, such as the submission of a loading readiness certificate for grain or other sensitive cargoes or a completed declaration to the respective port authorities .
