history

The Habitation de Québec , the first building in the city built by Samuel de Champlain , burned down on August 4, 1682. In its place a church built entirely of stone was built in 1688. Originally it was consecrated to the Infant Jesus , but two years later it was named Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire in memory of the French victory in the Battle of Québec . Since the failed Québec expedition of 1711, when eight ships of a British invasion fleet sank in the St. Lawrence River , it has had its current name (victoire or victory in the plural). In 1723/24 the church was extended by a few meters.

The British artillery fire during the two and a half month siege of Québec in 1759 largely destroyed the church, only the walls remained. Under the direction of Jean Baillairgé, the building was restored between 1763 and 1766. His son François Baillairgé redesigned the facade in 1816, in keeping with contemporary tastes with some neoclassical and Palladian influences. The furnishings were exchanged between 1854 and 1857, after which a new church tower was built by 1864. In 1888 the walls of the interior were given a series of frescoes that refer to the history of the city. As one of the first buildings in the province of Québec, Notre-Dame-des-Victoires was listed as a Historic Monument in 1929.
