Nouvelle Planète is a foundation founded on November 12, 1986 and based in Switzerland, based on the model, ideas and ethics of Albert Schweitzer . She tries to be neutral about religion and politics . The non-governmental organization supports small, specific projects in the countries of the southern hemisphere and organizes “missions” between people from the north and south in order to help people to help themselves.

Historical origins

Nouvelle Planète emerged from the project to renovate the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné ( Gabon ). The founder of the non-governmental organization, Willy Randin, former director of the hospital, and Maurice Lack, an architect specializing in bioclimate, proposed a project based on renewable energies. Corresponding research was carried out, but those responsible at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital were not interested in the project. Instead of simply giving up their ideas, Lack and Randin wanted to develop these technologies in other parts of the world. To this end, they founded the Albert Schweitzer Ecological Center (CEAS) and the Schweitzer Sahel-Aktion. The latter organization became Nouvelle Planète in Switzerland.

At the time, Willy Randin was working for a large development organization in Switzerland, and he could see how much citizens wanted to understand the reality of the South and mobilize to support small projects and build direct relationships with beneficiaries.

Due to the success of the Schweitzer Sahel-Aktion, it was decided in 1986 to expand the activities to Haiti and then to the Amazon , while the projects in the Sahel zone were continued with the Albert Schweitzer Ecological Center. At this point the name of the organization is changed to Nouvelle Planète .

philosophy

The philosophy of Nouvelle Planète is based on the ethics of Albert Schweitzer, who said: "I am life that wants to live, in the midst of life that also wants to live." This ethic means respect for all forms of life, a balance between people, Animals and plants. The concept of “reverence for life” is geared towards concrete action, the search for simplicity, mutual trust and optimism. Nouvelle Planète still operates today with principles inspired by this ethic. The association works with groups in the south and north according to three basic principles:

  1. We only support local initiatives and respond to the needs of the disadvantaged population in rural areas.
  2. We rely on the knowledge and experience of the village groups and the professionalism of our local coordination organizations.
  3. We guarantee the independence of the projects and guarantee long-term project support.

The non-governmental organization is represented in around ten different countries and is active in the following areas: sustainable agriculture, water and hygiene, the environment, education and health. For example, Nouvelle Planète built a bridge in Vietnam.

With development and ecological problems increasing every year, and with the gap between rich and poor countries never widening, Nouvelle Planète offers solutions for people in the north who are willing to invest time, who have the skills or money and who sometimes face difficulties have to mobilize and show solidarity.

Operations for young adults

These missions abroad enable young people, adults / seniors or groups to volunteer in the form of humanitarian vacations. The participants work in groups on a project and take part in community activities. Preparatory meetings take place before departure. The aim of these trips is to become aware of the reality of the south and to exchange ideas with the local population. The NGO's action is long-term, as the managing director Philippe Randin told the Swiss daily Le Temps: “The goal is not for our participants to build a school or implement their own project. We are committed to the long term. Our operations aim to bring different population groups together in order to raise the awareness of the participants. "
