Architecture and history

The house is part of the cathedral curia of Merseburg Cathedral and was built in the 17th century. The massive looking two-storey building stands at the gable facing the Domplatz and is covered with a half-hip roof.

The city council of Merseburg decided to accommodate the Willi-Sitte-Galerie in the building , in which works by the painter Willi Sitte are shown in particular . The Merseburg architect Claudia Janich won a competition announced on February 7, 2003 for the necessary renovation of the house . The house was then rebuilt and renovated over two years. The project was implemented as an Urban 21 project with funds from the ERDF Structure Fund and from the funding program for the protection of urban monuments. It was then handed over to the Willi-Sitte-Foundation .

On the occasion of Sitte's 85th birthday, the gallery was opened on February 28, 2006. In 2012, an independent gallery was set up alongside the foundation. The building is used for changing exhibitions, but also for art courses and public events.

In the local register of monuments , the curia is listed as a monument under registration number 094 20157 .
