The NOVA laser system at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore , California , United States, was an experimental research facility. In it experiments on inertial fusion took place. Their primary purpose was the research and simulation of nuclear weapons . In addition, the experiments also served to research inertial fusion as a new and environmentally friendly energy source. The successor system to the NOVA is the National Ignition Facility .

construction

The NOVA has a neodymium glass laser system with 192 beams. These rays are all shot at a small target, which is often referred to as a target . After this happens, inertial fusion occurs .
