Number One Observatory Circle
Number One Observatory Circle is the official residence of the Vice President of the United States of America . The building is located in the northeast section of the United States Naval Observatory grounds in Washington, DC ; it was built in 1893 for the then director. In 1974, Congress voted to make it the official residence of the Vice President.
Before that time, the respective vice presidents lived in their own homes; however, due to the constant change of office holders and their apartments, the costs for their protection were too high. Although the house was already available for its new purpose in 1974, it was three years before a vice president moved in. The first to live there was Walter Mondale . Every Vice President has lived in the house since then, currently Mike Pence .
