The association Zahl gegen Kummer eV is the umbrella organization for the largest free telephone advice service for children, young people and parents in Germany.

The association was founded in 1980 and has been a registered non-profit association based in Wuppertal since 1994. The organization has set itself the goal of being the conversation partner for all children and young people, their parents and other educators when others are absent. The counseling services offered by “Number Against Kummer” are the first point of contact for all questions, problems and particularly critical situations. If necessary, they open the way to further help. Currently Number gegen Kummer eV has 94 members, i. H. Local associations that maintain a location for the child and youth telephone and / or a location for the parent telephone. These locations are spread all over Germany. The local providers of counseling telephones are predominantly local associations of the German Child Protection Association, associations that were founded especially for this purpose or other local providers of free youth welfare.

Numbers gegen Kummer eV is run by an honorary board. The organization and coordination is carried out by the employees at the locations and the office in Wuppertal.

Voluntary work

Almost 3,500 employees of the "number against Kummer" work on a voluntary basis throughout Germany - around 500 even work on two advisory services. Around 2,500 volunteers and 300 young people at 15 telephone advice centers provide advice on Saturdays at “Young people advise young people” at 79 locations where the child and youth telephone is located. 75 e-mail advisors answer written inquiries from adolescents online. The parent telephone network includes 40 locations with around 1,000 advisors.

Development history

The forerunner of the number against Kummer eV, the federal working group for care telephones, is set up on November 30, 1980 in Bad Münstereifel. Within the German Child Protection Association in Wuppertal, it is the central coordination point for all child and youth telephone providers. At this point in time, the advice telephones can only be reached via local, chargeable numbers.

The first binding guidelines for advice were adopted in 1984, and a training concept for the advisors was drawn up.

With the help of Deutsche Telekom AG as a partner, the first nationwide number was set up in 1991, under which the first locations can be reached free of charge. To this day, Deutsche Telekom pays the call charges. The number of calls increased five-fold within a year.

In 2004 the association changed its name to number against Kummer eV

A new nationwide binding framework for training, supervision and advanced training for consultants was drawn up in the same year and approved by the general assembly.

In 2008, Zahl gegen Kummer eV successfully applied for the EU-wide number 116 111, the “helpline for children seeking help”, which was created by the European Commission.

The number for children and youths telephone number against Kummer has existed since 1980, making it one of the oldest telephone advice services in the world. There are currently 79 locations in Germany, i. H. 79 lines open on working days, manned by around 2500 voluntary, trained advisors. Young people advise young people

The participation project “Young people advise young people” was developed in 1994 and since then has been supplementing the consultation on Saturday at several locations of the children's and youth telephone. Just like the adult counselors, the young counselors between the ages of 16 and 21 receive extensive training before they give advice on the child and youth telephone.

Online advice for children and young people

Since 2003, the “number against grief” has offered children and young people the opportunity to ask their problems and questions confidentially in the em @ il counseling service. Experienced, voluntary consultants who have completed a special additional qualification work in the em @ il consulting team. Chat advice has also been available since October 2019. Here children and young people can ask their questions and problems confidentially in the live chat. Experienced consultants work in the chat counseling team.

Parents telephone 0800 111 0 550

In order to offer parents an adequate platform for discussion, Number gegen Kummer eV, together with its member organizations and with the support of the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, set up a separate advice line for parents and other parents in 2001. Existing local initiatives will be included in the nationwide network. The parents' phone can also be reached anonymously and free of charge throughout Germany. Deutsche Telekom AG also pays all call charges for calls to the parents' telephone. There are currently 39 locations in Germany with around 1000 trained consultants who volunteer in their free time.

The parents' phone is manned Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and can be reached on 0800 - 111 0 550.

CHI is actively committed to the rights of children - especially the right to be heard - and presents the work of children's and youth telephones at the UN and the EU.

Numbers gegen Kummer eV is one of the founding members of Child Helpline International.

Insafe

In order to organize the cooperation and exchange of the national information centers and advice centers on a European level, the Ins @ fe network networks the national projects via the platform “Better Internet for Kids” (www.betterinternetforkids.eu).
