Ny-Friesland is a landscape in the northeast of Spitsbergen , Svalbard .

geography

The headland extends over the 80th degree of longitude. Verlegenhuken at the northern end of Ny-Friesland is also the northernmost point of the whole island - but not of all of Svalbard. In the east, Ny-Friesland is bounded by the Hinlopenstrasse , on the opposite side of which is the island of Nordaustlandet . In the south, Ny-Friesland is bounded by a line from the Vaigattbogen (bay in Hinlopenstraße) via Oslobreen and Kvitbreen, then south to Keplerbreen and Lomonosovfonna and finally from Mittag-Lefflerbreen. The western border is the Wijdefjorden .

In the southeast lies Olav-V-Land , in the south Bünsow-Land , and in the southwest, across the strait over the Mittag-Lefflerbreen, Dickson-Land .

In the south of Ny-Friesland are the two highest mountains of Svalbard, the Newtontoppen (1713 m) and the Perriertoppen (1712 m). There the terrain is very rugged and steep rock faces make the ice desert difficult to cross. In the north there are two large glaciers, Åsgardfonna and Valhallfonna .

There are no settlements in Ny-Friesland, expeditions here must be reported to the Sysselmann (governor). The eastern coastal strip against the Hinlopenstrasse is part of the Northeast Svalbard Nature Reserve . The coastal area on both sides of the innermost bay of the Wijdefjorden form the Indre Wijdefjorden National Park .

Arve Staxrud (1881–1933) was the first to cross Ny-Friesland when he came to the aid of the survivors of the German Arctic Expedition in the Sorgfjorden in 1913 , led by Herbert Schröder-Stranz .

etymology

Ny-Friesland takes its name from Friesland in the Netherlands .
