history

Origin of the name

The Perriertoppen was named in 1946 by a French expedition after the French geodesist and general Georges Perrier (1872-1946) who died in the same year .

First ascent

The Perriertoppen was climbed for the first time in 1950 as part of a French expedition.

Location and surroundings

The Perriertoppen is located north of the Tryggvebreen Glacier in the Atomfjella mountain group, the most alpine mountain area in Svalbard . This is located in the southwest of the Ny-Friesland area in the northeast of the main island of Svalbard.

The highest mountain in the archipelago, the Newtontoppen , is located about 22 kilometers southeast of the Perriertoppen and only towers above it by one meter.

Routes to the summit

The Perriertoppen is far from any settlements in the arctic and mountainous terrain of the island. Reaching it has the character of an expedition . To the east of the Perriertoppen there is a mountain pass at 1200 meters that can serve as a starting point for the ascent. The eastern flank of the mountain is steep, so that the ascent must be climbed with equipment such as crampons , ice ax and safety ropes .

On April 20, 2007, Robert Jasper and Markus Stofer succeeded in the first ascent of the south face of the Perriertoppen. The ascent is a mixed climbing route and was done in alpine style . They named the route I want to be a polar bear and rated them with the difficulty M7.
