The MEC 502 is a radio-controlled , diesel-electric shunting locomotive from the manufacturer Orenstein & Koppel , which was designed as a telelok for use on works railways and shunting services .

history

First experiences with a four-axle, diesel-hydraulic Telelok with two end driver's cabs, which was built in six copies, led to the construction of a lighter shunting locomotive in cooperation with BBC, with and for the Dutch ironworks ESTEL Koninklijke Hoogovens in IJmuiden, developed by Orenstein and Koppel (O & K) also with two end cabins for the Dortmund railway . The series delivered in 1980 comprised only four machines.

technology

The MEC 502 is one of the few diesel- electric diesel locomotives built by Orenstein and Koppel and one of the last generation of locomotive types that was launched before production was discontinued. Instead of the middle driver's cab, two end driver's cabs are located between the shunting cabs behind the buffer beam. The BBC synchronous generator, driven by the diesel engine, generates a DC voltage that can influence the frequency of the three-phase current generated via electronic inverters. This supplies the three asynchronous traction motors positioned next to each axis.

Use and whereabouts

After only 15 years of service, three still operational machines were shut down by the Dortmund railway and sold to Holland.
