ob - tampons were developed in 1947 by the German engineer Carl Hahn and the lawyer Heinz Mittag and in 1950 by Dr. Carl Hahn KG brought on the market. The gynecologist Judith Esser Mittag advised the two developers on medical issues. In 1974 Johnson & Johnson took over the company.

The factory in Wuppertal - Heckinghausen produces 2 billion ob tampons annually, of which 1.2 billion are sold annually in Germany according to the manufacturer. Stiftung Warentest rated the product as very good in 2003 .

The brand name ob is an abbreviation for "without a band ".

ob-tampons are offered in various sizes and designs, with Johnson & Johnson bringing a new “generation” of tampons onto the market approximately every four to five years.
